HT Strip – Hot Paint Remover

HT Strip Heavy Duty Steel Paint Stripper

HT Strip is a heavy-duty, highly-alkaline, immersion paint stripper. It removes a wide variety of coatings from steel surfaces. HT Strip is an excellent choice to clean heavy deposits off of fixtures and steel paint hooks. It will also strip light to moderate deposits of rust and scale. It removes acrylics, polyesters, epoxies, urethanes, amides, melamines, and nylons.

Paints such as alkyds, polyesters, and cellulose coatings dissolve in hot alkaline solutions. The molecular bonds in the molecules break down with alkalinity. This process is slow without the accelerating ability of plasticizers or temperature. HT Strip has the plasticizers that penetrate into the surface and soften the coating so the alkalinity can break down the paint.

HT Strip will not remove most fluoropolymers. It should not be used on aluminum, zinc, or copper alloys.

HT Strip is a blend of alkaline builders, plasticizers, surfactants and high temperature solvents. It is a highly alkaline product. However it must be used carefully to avoid hazardous situations. Therefore, it is corrosive to skin, eyes, and some metals. No flammable fumes or fire hazards can occur by normal use of this product. Use low to moderate ventilation. Mild steel or stainless tanks and equipment may be used. Conventional heating such as electric, steam, or gas-fired heaters are necessary. Slow to moderate agitation may be used but is normally not necessary. Do not use air agitation with this product.

Strip Times

John Deere Green was removed in ten minutes. John Deere Dull Black was removed in one hour. Strip times will vary with different paints. Coating thickness will affect strip time.

Use

HT Strip is used at concentrations of 30 to 100% by volume and between 120 and 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Typically it is used at concentrations of 40% to 60% by volume and 160 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit in an immersion application. This product should not be sprayed. There will be a wide variety of strip times due to the variety of paints and coating thicknesses this product will strip. Typically contact time will be 30 minutes to several hours. The time will also vary with the shape and mass of the product.

After the paints have been stripped parts need to be washed by a water spray to remove chemical residues and any paint which may remain clinging to the surface. Because of the alkaline nature of HT Strip, flash rusting is not normally a problem, however parts should be dried or processed soon after stripping to avoid any corrosion.

The concentration must be maintained at the proper strength and the bath needs to be decanted occasionally to remove paint sludge (mostly pigment) from the bottom of the tank.

Advantages

The big advantage to using HT Strip is its exceptionally long bath life. HT Strips baths if properly handled will last for many years.

This product is very versatile in the type of paints it removes. It will strip many paints that other paint strippers will not.

Disposal

This product is alkaline. It must be neutralized prior to disposal. The product is biodegradable after neutralization. However there may be heavy metals residues from the paint or metal that may limit the ability to discharge the material into a sanitary sewer.
